When I made my first draft of the top ten reasons to retire I came up with 23 solid reasons to do so. These were the ten best of the 23.

Most all of the “top ten” need a stipulation from the reader. That being, retirement should not be measured in dollars and cents but rather the time you are “spending” by delaying retirement.

Retirement is more about time than money.

Here are my top ten reasons to retire now.

Retire now because…

1) You are not getting younger… You are one day closer to your obituary, the more you delay retiring the less time you will have being retired…do the math.

2) You become physically weaker as you age…as you become more frail you will enjoy retirement less…you are not able to do the things at 65 you could at 50…it is a fact often ignored.

3) You can start working on your “bucket list”…what do you want to see and do before you die and while you are able…my personal to dos include seeing Australia, New Zealand, the Norwegian fjords…what are yours?

4) There are no assurances for the future…if you retire today, is tomorrow a given?

5) When you are retired you can choose who you associate with…Can you do this now?…This one fact can cause a great deal of stress for some working people.

6) The sooner you retire, the fewer regrets you will have about things you didn’t do…some retirees spend more time listing regrets vs. recalling things accomplished when they can do no more.

7) You will have opportunities sooner to volunteer, mentor, give back, make a positive impact on people…this is a wonderful reward for those retiring now.

8) Your quality of life may not be all that great in 10 to 20 years…enjoy life now; good health seldom increases with age.

9) When you retire you are doing what you want to do; not what someone else wants you to do.

10) Retiring beats working any day of the week.

These top ten reasons to retire will hopefully get you to thinking more about not putting off retirement. I hope you enjoy being retired as much as we have for the last 14 wonderful years.
